Student Testimonials 2023/2024
My favorite thing about this class is the materials gave me an opportunity to see more perspectives and how they were being applied to productions around me that I've never seen before. The plays and course were also well-timed and were never overwhelming. Everything was an appropriate length and level of difficulty. I liked that we were able to choose a play to read and what we wanted to do our final project on too. This course wasn't geared just to actors or just to playwrights, it included all aspects of drama making and if someone wanted to dive deeper into one of those positions they could and were simultaneously never penalized for not knowing/able to do one of those roles. Another bonus that I really enjoyed was the positive and supportive classroom environment from day 0 until the end and how thoughtful, respectful, and productive all of our discussions were.
Some of my favourite things were the group discussions after watching/reading a show- getting to see what everyone in class thought about when they were independently consuming the media was so interesting, especially when everyone had differing thoughts! I loved getting to see the shows in person, especially Sanctuary City, what a beautiful show. I don't know that I would change anything, I thought this class was well done.
Favorite was definitely going to see each show that we did, it was such a fun experience to go out and just be immersed in theatre.
TAKE IT!!! It was my favorite class this entire year. Though a lot of it was the energy brought in by my classmates, I think this course is set up in a way that makes it easy to create a welcoming and fun space. You will also learn more than just things related to theatre. You will analyze good storytelling and explore social issues, both historical and contemporary.
Embrace every moment; this class is a unique journey into the world of theater that combines creative expression with practical performance skills. It's a space where you're encouraged to take risks, be bold in your interpretations, and collaborate closely with peers. You'll leave with not just an understanding of drama, but with experiences that enrich your appreciation for the art of storytelling on stage.
Before this class, I didn't know what to expect- I had no friends going into it, and no outside knowledge of how theater works behind the scenes. I had only my knowledge of a few shows I've seen on Broadway. After taking this class, I find myself more in touch with my creative side, and I'm happy to say I made some friends. I am very much not a theater person, but I had a blast in that classroom.
I found this class to be one of the most accessible classes I've taken in all of my time at RIT, it was very flexible and could be adapted too.
Alexa is incredible not only at directing but also just as a resource to go to about all things theatre-related or otherwise. Andy was 100% correct in calling her "everybody's favorite theatre mom" at the show reveal. She's a fantastic instructor, director, and likely the kindest person I've ever met, and if she ever leaves this institution it will irreversibly destroy the very fiber of theatre at this school.
This course provides a great opportunity for students to participate in the performing arts. I appreciate all the work that Alexa did to make this course happen. She was also very helpful as a performing arts contact. She provided encouragement to get work done and made deadlines flexible.
This box is too small to list everything that was amazing about this class and Alexa. Some highlights were: the positive learning environment that was established through the learning contract, constant communication, accommodating and transparency about turning-in work policies, respect and hearing everyone's opinion in a half lecture -half discussion-based class. Another thing was the material presented was diverse and uplifted a lot of different representations. All the plays were well-picked and I enjoyed being able to choose our own play too. The timing was also great, giving us a week+ to read whole plays and write discussion posts. Lectures were interesting and the workload was super manageable and appreciated. Alexa is overall a 10/10 professor and the course was a step out of my comfort zone and I'm glad I was able to take it and took a lot away from it.
This was by far the most accessible class I have been in.
This professor has such a positive and welcoming environment in her classrooms and I always feel excited and happy about going to class! I felt as though I learned a lot through the in class activities and got to know other students more through this work.
She was great all around. She created a very positive environment where the students were allowed to explore the subject in a way that personally resonated with all of us and enhanced our understanding of the subject while we were all having a great time.
Alexa is such a supportive, wonderful instructor who you can tell cares deeply for all her students. I came into the class not knowing anyone, and she made me feel welcome and always made sure everyone was included and felt safe. She connected with everyone in the class and provided one of the most unique and interesting classes I've taken here.
